Using a Hoberman Sphere in Music Class

The Hoberman sphere can be a wonderfully engaging tool for music teachers. Here are some easy ways to use your sphere!

  1. Practice Taking A Singer’s Breath Have your students practice taking deep, low breaths while the sphere opens, then exhaling while it closes. Then, have them apply this breathing to singing!
  2. Imaginative Prop Your hoberman sphere can represent a thousand different things; a bubblegum bubble, the earth turning in the sky, or an astronaut’s helmet. Think about your repertoire and see what songs could be more engaging with a fun prop!
  3. A Vocal improvisation Guide Demonstrate vocal improvisation while moving the sphere – opening it on climactic moments  of the musical phrase and closing it during the resolution. Have your students improvise while holding the sphere.
