Music Class Activities that scream “It’s Time For Summer Break!”

We are SO CLOSE to the finish line! Here are four music class activities that scream “It’s Time For Summer Break!!!”

1. Playlist For My Day Off

Looking for an engaging activity that will get your students excited about music class? Check out this “Day Off Playlist” project! First, have your students choose their dream “day off” activities and create images of themselves enjoying each one. Then, have them choose a song to go with each activity and explain how it relates to the experience. Finally, have your students compile their chosen songs into a playlist for their day off.

2. Summertime Theme Songs – Music Composition Project

This fun project will keep your students interested in music class through May and June! Have your students learn about creating with intent through composing “Summertime Theme Songs” on chrome music lab. For this project, have students choose several summertime items (or give them ideas) and explain (or help them decide) how elements of these things can be represented through the music they create.

Here are some ideas to get you started!:

• Surfboard-> Create a theme song where the speed of the surfboard is represented by a fast tempo.
• Sailboat-> Compose a theme song where the motion of the sailboat is represented by a melodic line that goes up and down repeatedly.
• Palm Tree-> Create a theme song where the growth of the palm tree is represented by a melodic line that goes from low to high. 
• Sandcastle-> Compose a theme song where the building of a sandcastle is represented by a musical texture that goes from “thin” to “thick” 

Through completing this project, students learn about how composers can represent non-musical ideas (speed, motion, growth, building) through music.

3. My Musical Vacation Project

Who DOESN’T love a trip! First, have students plan a dream vacation by choosing 5 locations they would like to visit. This could be a local trip, a road trip, an international trip, or a trip to fantasy lands. Then, have students choose songs to represent the locations they are visiting. They could choose a song that is from the location, has the location’s name in the title, or was performed by someone from the location. Finally, have students explain WHY they chose this song.

4. My Musical Amusement Park

If your music class is like mine, they count the days until the end of the year trip to Six Flags! Here is a music class project to capture this energy!

For this project, have students draw designs for 5 amusement park rides to create their dream amusement park. Then, students should compose music that represents the overall motion or feeling of each ride using chrome music lab. This is a fun way to get students excited about music composition and requires no prior musical knowledge.

Here are some cool ideas for the composition instructions:

• Ferris Wheel-> compose a song that goes up and down repeatedly to mimic the motion of a ferris wheel
• Bumper Cars-> compose a song with several sudden stops to mimic the motion of bumper cars.
• Roller Coaster-> compose a song with a fast tempo to mimic the motion of a roller coaster.
• Log Flume-> compose a song that slowly gets higher then suddenly low to mimic the motion of a log flume.
• Haunted Mansion-> compose a song in a minor key to mimic the feeling of the haunted mansion.
