Ahhh spring is in the air! As February ends and March begins, we start to feel the very beginnings of the spring season. Here are four must-have projects to help your students grow their musical knowledge this season!
1. Musical Traditions of Ireland
St. Patricks Day falls on the cusp between winter and spring, but I like to think of it as a spring holiday! Celebrate with your students by having them research the musical traditions of Ireland and creating a slideshow to present their findings. These projects are sure to be a hit!
Your student’s slideshow should include:
- An image of a map of Ireland.
- An image of the flag of Ireland.
- Names and images of at least three traditional Irish instruments.
- Names of at least three traditional Irish songs and a brief description of what they hear in the music.
- Names and images at least three Irish musical artists, along with three examples of each of their musics.

2. Springtime Songs: Music Composition Project for Chrome Music Lab
In this project, have students create songs for four springtime items that represent the item in the music. I like to use a bunny, chick, flower, and butterfly. Here is my explanation to students about HOW to represent the items in their music:
- Bunny: Consider how bunnies hop and create a composition that goes up and down.
- Chick: To represent how chicks peck repeatedly at their food, create a composition that incorporates repeated patterns.
- Flower: Imagine a seed growing into a flower and then create a composition that demonstrates this growth. Represent this growth by utilizing a texture that goes from thin to thick.
- Butterfly: Compose a melodic line that reflects a butterfly’s flight path by using high to low pitches.
Through this project, your students will learn to compose with intention and explore how composers can represent ideas through sound.

3. Music Around The World – Music Research Project
Earth day falls in April, and this year your students can expand their musical horizons by completing their “music around the world” projects!
In this project, students should choose a country to focus in on. Then, they should create a slideshow presentation for their peers that feature the following:
- Background Info: Name their country, the continent it is located on, and the primary languages of the country. Include a photograph of the flag and a map of the country.
- Genres: Highlight 5 popular genres listened to in their country of focus.
- Songs: Identify 5 popular songs from their country of focus.
- Current Musical Artists: Name 3 current musical artist’s from their country of focus and include photographs of each one.
- Historical Musical Artists: Note 5 artists in history from their country of focus.
- Instruments: Name 1 instruments invented in their country of focus and include an image.
- Venues: Explain popular musical venue types in their country of focus.

4. Playlist For My Future – Music Project for Google Slides
Perhaps the saddest part of Spring for teachers is when we say goodbye to our graduating class. In this project, students create plans for their future and choose a song and image to represent each of these plans. Then, they compile each of these songs into a “playlist for their future.” These projects will be remembered as a happy farewell to music class for your graduating students!
Students will plan out their future, then select songs and images to represent the following:
- their future education
- job
- location
- house
- family
- pets
- car
- hobbies
- impact
After selecting each song, student should write a short explanation for HOW each song represents each aspect of their future life.
