Spring is just around the corner! As spring break approaches, there are LOTS of fun ways to celebrate the season in the music room. Here are a few of my favorites that you are welcome to steal or buy on TPT!
1. Have students compose “Springtime Songs” on Chrome Music Lab!
Have your students pick out a few things that remind them of spring, then discuss ways that they can represent these things in a composition! For example, if they think of bees buzzing in the air, they can use a fast tempo. For flowers growing, they can compose a melody that slowly rises in pitch.

2. Learn about the musical traditions of Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day.
Have your students research and create a presentation about the musical traditions of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Students can learn about traditional Irish instruments, songs, and famous Irish musicians.

3. Learn about the contributions of women in music to celebrate Women’s history month!
In the United States, March is “Women’s History Month!” To celebrate this month, have students select a women who has made a significant contribution to music as a composer, songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, rapper, etc, and complete a research project on their life.

4. Celebrate Earth Day by learning about music around the world.
Earth day is celebrated on April 22, and it was created in an effort to support environmental protection. To get students thinking globally, have them learn about music around the world! Each student can pick a country and research its musical traditions, including popular genres, instruments, and artists.

5. Get your students excited about graduation by creating a “playlist for their futures.”
Have students map out their futures by creating a “plan” for future highlights, such as where they will attend college, where they will work, and where they will live. For each of these “plans,” have them choose a song to represent this point in their life. For example, if they choose to live in New York City, the song “New York, New York” could represent this on their playlist.
